An Engine Producing Ephemeral Light
steel, flask, motor, Vibrio Fischeri diluted in seawater
Above a canopy bed a triple pendulum mechanism is mounted. The engine generates quasi-periodic movement to a cultivation flask filled with bioluminescent bacteria (Vibrio Fischeri diluted in seawater). The motion-triggered glow of the bacteria is permanent, provided the conical flask is kept in motion. Visitors are encouraged to lie down in the bed and take part in the installation itself.
Despite being seemingly chaotic to the spectator, long- term exposure photography reveals an intricate pattern behind the random appearance of the movement.
